German Engineering Excellence

Hydrogen technology from Germany

High-pressure components, storage solutions, and equipment manufacturing for the hydrogen economy, designed, tested, and manufactured in accordance with AD 2000, EN 13445, and ASME. Under the umbrella of hydrogen technology, we bring together three complementary product lines: membrane technology and membrane housings, gas separation units for electrolysers, and stationary hydrogen pressure storage systems up to 400 bar.

About WOLF

Vessel construction that sets the standard.

WOLF Behälter- und Apparatebau designs, manufactures, and tests the high-pressure components of modern hydrogen systems. As a family-run specialist with two locations in Wilnsdorf and Herdorf, we have been building pressure vessels since 1952, double Certified in accordance with AD 2000, EN 13445, and ASME for the German, European, and North American markets. In-house design team, 100 percent non-destructive testing (NDT) and WOLF Safety Technology will support your project from the initial consultation through to commissioning.

Materials

P355, the material of choice for hydrogen

Approximately 95% of our H2 storage tanks and hydrogen pressure storage tanks are made from fine-grained carbon steel of grade P355 (P355NH, P355NL1). With proper welding and consistent stress relieving heat treatment, hydrogen embrittlement is effectively controlled, making P355 the economically superior choice over stainless steel. We supply stainless steels, duplex alloys, and nickel-based alloys specifically for applications where corrosion resistance or purity is required.

Quality, in black and white

quality assurance (QA)

Quality assurance (QA) is handled by an in-house team of certified inspectors using non-destructive and destructive testing methods (VT, MT, PT, UT, TOFD, and phased array), precise 3D measurement, and complete batch traceability. All materials, components, and filler metals remain traceable, and all documentation is auditable and compliant with applicable standards. This ensures that every component meets our quality standards and complies with applicable regulations.

FAQs

Interesting facts about our hydrogen solutions

Hydrogen tolerates no mistakes. This demanding medium places extreme demands on diffusion tightness, weld quality, and material suitability. Since this is a highly sensitive field, we address the most common questions here regarding our H2-specific testing procedures, safety standards, and manufacturing expertise.

How long does it take to deliver a standard H2 pressure storage tank? +

Subject to available production capacity, we deliver standard volumes within 12 to 20 weeks from the date of a binding order. Custom-made high-pressure vessels or vessels made of special alloys require 5 to 9 months, including material procurement. You will receive a binding confirmation once the technical specifications have been clarified. We recommend submitting inquiries early—the availability of H2-compatible pressure vessel steel has been sporadically tight since 2024.

Do you also offer complete packages that include steel construction, platforms, and insulation? +

Yes. Upon request, we supply the H2 storage system as a complete package—including:

• Steel construction: platforms, ladders, railings, and pipe supports in accordance with EN 1090

• Heating systems: half-tube or full-tube coils, electric trace heating

• Coatings: TSA coating, CUI coatings, fire-retardant coatings (Chartek, Firetex)

• Insulation: thermal, refrigeration, contact, and fire protection insulation

• Preservation and drying prior to shipment

Ask us about our comprehensive packages—we coordinate suppliers and save you the hassle of managing them yourself.

What maintenance measures are required for my hydrogen storage system? +

Hydrogen pressure vessels are subject to periodic inspections in accordance with the German Industrial Safety Regulation (BetrSichV). Typically, the following are inspected:

• Internal inspection (every 5 years, depending on the inspection plan)

• Strength testing / pressure test (in most cases, every 10 years)

• External inspection (every 2 years)

• Replacing gaskets on flange and nozzle connections

• Functional testing of pressure safety valves and pressure measurement points

As part of our WOLF Safety Technology program, we proactively plan these measures, coordinate with the notified body, and directly carry out the associated work that is not subject to testing.

Which standards do your H2 pressure storage tanks comply with? +

We manufacture in accordance with all relevant pressure equipment regulations worldwide:

• AD 2000 Information Sheet – German standard for pressure equipment

• EN 13445 (Parts 1–5, including Annex B and Annex T for cyclic loading assessment)

• ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 and Div. 2, with U, U2, and S stamps

• PED 2014/68/EU – European Pressure Equipment Directive

• EN 1090-1/-2 (load-bearing steel structures)

• DIN EN ISO 3834 (welding technology), DIN ISO 9001 (quality management)

• Upon request: ISO 11120, GB 150 (China), JIS B 8265 (Japan)
